Learning about his passing from cancer hit me hard. John was one of my all-time favorite guitarists, and his influence on my own playing is immeasurable. As a guitarist, I rarely find inspiration in other guitar players, but John was an exception. His vibrato had a unique ability to make a single note sing so beautifully, and his ear for melodic phrasing and strategic shredding set him apart as one of the most tasteful and talented guitarists I know.
Most of my musical inspiration comes from opera singers and violinists, and the guitarists I truly admire are those who emulate that kind of vibrato and phrasing. John Sykes did this masterfully. His talent for improvisation and freestyling was equally awe-inspiring. John, you will be deeply missed. Thank you for the endless inspiration.
